- IBM OpenDoc for Windows Q&A
- Final - 10/30/95
-
-
- Q1. Why is IBM taking over the development of OpenDoc for Windows NT
- and 95? What are you announcing exactly?
-
- A1. IBM, Novell and Apple have had several discussions about how to
- bring OpenDoc for Windows to market as quickly as possible. While
- there were several options on the table, the CI Labs sponsors came to
- this as the best option. IBM has assumed responsibility for the
- development and marketing of OpenDoc for Windows 95 and Windows NT.
- ____________________________________________________________________
-
- Q2. Is IBM going to hire OpenDoc for Windows developers from Novell
- or receive the base code from Novell?
-
- A2. Novell will give IBM the OpenDoc for Windows development code
- completed to date. At this point, there are no plans for Novell
- developers to join IBM.
- ____________________________________________________________________
- Q3. When does IBM plan to beta and deliver OpenDoc for Windows NT and
- 95?
-
- A3. Based on our current development schedule, IBM plans to deliver a
- beta of the OpenDoc for Windows NT and 95 SDK in Q296. We anticipate
- the delivery of golden code in Q396.
- ____________________________________________________________________
- Q4. Are IBM's OpenDoc for Windows delivery dates earlier or later
- than Novell's planned dates?
-
- A4. Novell announced that OpenDoc for Windows NT and 95 would be
- available in December, 1995, and that Windows 3.1 would follow four to
- six weeks later. While IBM's planned delivery dates are later than
- Novell's originally announced dates, the CI Labs sponsors, Apple, IBM
- and Novell, agreed that this new development agreement is the
- currently the quickest way to market.
- ____________________________________________________________________
-
- Q5. Will the additional burden of the OpenDoc for Windows development
- slow the development of OpenDoc for OS/2?
-
- A5. Not at all. IBM plans to deliver the golden OpenDoc toolkit for
- OS/2 by the end of 1995, as promised. OpenDoc will be integrated into
- a future release of OS/2 Warp in Q296.
- ____________________________________________________________________
-
- Q6. If IBM is focusing on delivering OpenDoc for OS/2 by year end and
- Windows by end of Q2 '96 - when can we expect to see delivery of
- OpenDoc on AIX?
-
- A6. Plans are in place for delivery of OpenDoc for AIX for Q3 '96.
- ____________________________________________________________________
-
- Q7. Is IBM also taking over the development of Novell's OpenDoc
- Component Glue?
-
- A7. Yes. Novell's OpenDoc Component Glue is a part of OpenDoc on the
- Windows platform.
- ____________________________________________________________________
-
- Q8. Where will the IBM OpenDoc for Windows development team be
- located?
-
- A8. The IBM OpenDoc for Windows development team will be located in
- Austin, Texas, and will work hand-in-hand with the IBM OpenDoc for
- OS/2 development team which will moving from Boca Raton, Florida to
- Austin. The tight integration between the OpenDoc for Windows and the
- OpenDoc for OS/2 team will ultimately lead to a better product getting
- to market faster.
- ____________________________________________________________________
- Q9. Will IBM hire additional programmers to handle the OpenDoc for
- Windows development?
-
- A9. IBM will dedicate significant additional resources to OpenDoc
- development overall.
-
- ____________________________________________________________________
- Q10. Is IBM's PSP division still handling OpenDoc development?
-
- A10. No, all OpenDoc development has been centralized under IBM's SWS
- division. Steve Mills, the General Manager of SWS, is IBM's chief
- object strategist, and therefore SWS development has been
- centralized under SWS.
- ____________________________________________________________________
- Q11. There had been some early press reports that Novell and Canopy
- were in discussions to transfer OpenDoc for Windows development to
- Canopy. What happened?
-
- A11. As we've said, there were several options on the table which
- IBM, Apple and Novell were discussing. The rumors about Canopy were
- related to Novell's negotiations with Canopy. Overall, the CI Labs
- sponsors felt OpenDoc for Windows could be brought to market faster if
- development was handled by a team that is already intimately familiar
- with SOM, Bento, OpenDoc and Windows. The tight integration between
- the OpenDoc for Windows and the OpenDoc for OS/2 team will ultimately
- lead to a better product getting to market faster.
- ____________________________________________________________________
-
- Q12. Isn't IBM biting off more than it can chew? You haven't even
- delivered your own OpenDoc version yet, and your track record in
- software delivery is less than stellar.
-
- A12. I think you are working on old data. IBM's recent record on
- software delivery and quality is quite strong. Our software,
- especially our object-oriented application development software has
- won several industry awards this year. SOM, VisualAge for Smalltalk
- and C++, TeamConnection and IBM OpenClass are all well-respected OOAD
- tools.
-
- You have to remember that OpenDoc is product development under a
- microscope. The members of CI Labs feel OpenDoc is so important to
- the reusable software component marketplace of the future that we have
- been extremely open with our development. What you see is no less,
- and certainly no more, that what occurs in other software development
- organizations. The only difference is that we are sharing every
- success, and every backslide, with you.
- ____________________________________________________________________
- Q13. What does Novell's decision to stop development say about
- OpenDoc.
-
- A13. You'll have to talk to Novell, but I think it's clear that their
- decision speaks to Novell's increased focus on running its own
- business. They are still sponsors of CI Labs, and are still committed
- to OpenDoc.
- ____________________________________________________________________
-
- Q14. Will IBM handle the development of OpenDoc for Windows on its
- own, or will you work with any third parties?
-
- A14. At the moment, our plan and our delivery dates are based on our
- own activity. We are in discussions with several other third-parties,
- and will probably strike a relationship with them if it will help get
- OpenDoc for Windows to market quicker.
- ____________________________________________________________________
-
- Q15. Will IBM deliver a version of OpenDoc for Windows 3.1?
-
- A15. IBM's plans for OpenDoc for Windows includes Windows 95, Windows
- NT and Windows 3.1 (via windows 32s).
